Fall Happenings

Can you feel it? Can you smell it? Fall is here! The leaves outside my bedroom window are turning a beautiful, firey red. The nights are cool but the days still warm. I can hear West High School’s drumline rat-a-tat-tatting in the mornings and the announcer of the football games on Friday nights. And I love it! What would it be like to live in a location where there are no seasons? I don’t think I would like that…not at all.

The fall is building into a time of frantic activity. On Labor Day, I journeyed to Dubuque for my friend’s wedding. It was so much fun! I didn’t know anyone except the bride. I befriended the other bridesmaids almost immediately and we had a marvelous time. The groomsmen left something to be desired as far as looks…intelligence…and general sociability, so we definitely weren’t missing out there. I have included a photo of the three of them…

Classes are going well. I really enjoy being back in a classroom again. The discussions are engaging and the material is really interesting. I wish I could take Social Psych in the classroom as well. But the book is a very easy read and the guided independent study is incredibly well-structured.

I’ve been to a couple of football games this fall. Tailgating with the old HMB crowd has been so wonderful. It’s nice to see them again. Those friendships have shaped so much of who I am as an adult. They taught me how to drink and how to cut loose. They taught me how to march and how to be a fan. Most importantly, they taught me how to be a friend.

As full as the fall has been, it’s missing one thing – Matt! He’s been in Sioux City for four weeks on a family practice sub-internship. He’ll be back today, but then heads out with the rest of the boys for their road trip to Seattle. Ah well, I’ll meet them out in Seattle in a week. That wedding is going to be so much fun!

The CI picnic is really starting to pull together. We have a drumline and a magician…I’m still wrangling someone to do tours of the press box, though. I think the best part of this whole event is that it’s at Kinnick. It’s enough for me, anyways. I can’t believe how many people have RSVP’d. I like event planning but would never, ever choose it as a career path. No way, no how. There’s too much stress attached to these things.
That's all I have to report for now. I can't wait to jump in a pile of leaves!
Happy Fall!
