Nothing But Blue Skies...

I’m super excited! One of my favorite artists, Kenton Nelson, has a brand new collection of paintings. Check them out here on his website. Kenton Nelson is amazing. You might have seen some of his work featured in Diane Keaton’s beach house in Something’s Gotta Give. I love the eerie perfection of the world he creates. His environments are so vivid and attractive and seem so real, but if you look closely…they’re not real at all. Each and every human subject in his painting is perfectly proportioned to the point of being completely improbable. He flirts with graphic elements, but doesn’t ever quite cross over into total illustrative realms. Plus his use of color is so perfect. I love it!

Very exciting things are on my horizon. This summer I will be taking a psychology intro course to see if I jive with the world of psych. I plan to take two more courses next fall semester and finish up in the spring with one more. “Miss Molly,” you might ask, “Why are you taking all of these classes? Are you becoming a psychologist?” Well, my friends, in some ways I am. I have decided to go back to school for art therapy. In order to apply, I need 12 semester hours of psych work and 18 semester hours of studio coursework. I covered the studio hours in undergrad, but never managed to take a course in psychology. (I was too busy marching around a football field with a horn jammed in my face.) It’s time I spread my wings a little and get out of Iowa. I’m not sure yet where I’ll end up for grad school (Washington? Florida? Michigan? Illinois? Massachusetts?) but the very idea of all those possibilities pleases me to no end.

In the meantime, life is keeping me busy here in good ol’ Iowa City. I’m finally getting my studio set up the way I want. All that’s left is an easel, which I might purchase with some of that delightful tax rebate money that’s coming my way. I figure it’s a wise investment to put money into something that ends up making me money. Speaking of money…I finally got my car back from the shop. What an ordeal that turned out to be! Let’s just say that I feel very badly for some employees at Vic’s Auto Body who probably got their butts chewed for failing to move fast enough on my vehicle. I ended up taking it to Hansen Automotive where it was fixed quickly and relatively painlessly. The nasty part about this repair was that it ended up costing me money even though the accident was in no way my fault. Unfortunately my tire and steering shaft had depreciated, so I dropped about $200 in new parts and repairs. Oh well. Now I have a new steering shaft and front-end suspension. And I get to buy 3 more tires to match my new one. This is going to be a very expensive spring…I better start selling some paintings!

Last weekend, Melissa and I went to Des Moines to celebrate Nick’s birthday and Easter with the fam. It was a lovely weekend. We got into town on Friday night and hung out with a friend of mine who was doing a medical rotation in town. We went out for yummy Mexican food on the South Side followed by $1.00 Jello shots at our hotel bar. Saturday was spent running errands and preparing gifts. We meandered over to Paul and Rachel’s that evening and helped Nick celebrate his fifth year in style. It was a low-key celebration this year—we ordered pizza and Nick had a reasonable amount of gifts. The next morning we went to Easter mass and came back to Paul and Rachel’s house for chicken cordon bleu and carrot cake. It was delish. My family naturally loved Melissa and welcomed her as one of their own. A great time was had by all!

I’m looking forward to spring this year, probably more than in previous years. If only it would hurry up and get here! I’m ready to bust out my skirts and cute shoes! I'm ready for sunshine and blue sky...I'm tired of the gray and the rain...

Peace and love
